Ron Paul: Recommendations for U.S.

Congressman Ron Paul, writing in the Washington Times, offers a five-point plan to reform America’s foreign policy in a way that would make our Founding Fathers proud.

First, Paul says that America should no longer cede its sovereignty to international institutions.  This includes the North American Free Trade Agreement, the World Trade Organization, the United Nations and the North American Treaty Organization.

Second, America can no longer afford to police the world and stretch our military thin by having them deployed across the globe on humanitarian missions.  Instead, America should strictly focus on having a military strong enough to defend itself against any foreign threat.

Third, according to Paul, Congress must reassert its Constitutionally mandated and exclusive power to declare war.  In those cases in which Congress does not decide to deploy troops and the decision is left to the executive branch, America tends to end up in long and very costly wars.

Fourth, Paul states that America should lead by example instead of engaging in nation-building. Instead America should demonstrate to the rest of the world what a free and democratic society looks like.

Finally, Paul says that America must stop its practice of intervening in the matters of other sovereign nations.  If America’s sovereignty is to be respected, it must do so in other countries as well.

Actually if the USD was no longer the reserve currency, the US could still have trade deficits. Maybe not as large but as long as we allow Protectionist agreements from WTO and NAFTA that consider every barrier to trade except tarriffs and quotas as free trade it will still be a problem. Currently America runs trade deficits due to protectionist policies like competitors undervalued exchange rates by money printing, VAT taxes on US exports, and requirements that to export in some countries you have to setup a joint venture with local partners so that your technology can be copied. Since these practices continue and most countries are members of the WTO, then it appears the WTO considers these practices to be free trade. If the US dollar loses its reserve status and we still have these barriers against us then you can gurantee there will still be trade deficits. It would be a shame to lose reserve status for the dollar just because Congress signs bills they never read and it allowed itself to be fooled into thinking that these protectionist agreements against America are free trade. Yeah what a better way to confuse Congress and the people than to call Protectionist agreements against America free trade.

When the USD is no more a reserve currency, the US economy will pick up again. The trade deficit will go away quickly and demands of US goods will rise. It's the best solution for US and everyone else.

If we stopped all food & manufactured imports today, we'd add an extra $300-$400 billion to our economy right away, and instantly restore domestic demand for those products, thus stimulating demand for American workers to once again produce all those products. Our Capacity utilization is below 69%, giving us plenty of slack to immediately ramp of production of those goods we currently import.

We could easily do this, if we did as Ron Paul is suggesting and withdrew from NAFTA and the WTO, as well as withdrawing from China PNTR.

Good Ideas, but this would not solve our economic crisis today. We need immediate surgey to save the patient, not preach about life style changes while having a heart attack and stroke.
