Brazil’s Prime Minister revealed Wednesday that he plans to ask the World Trade Organization to impose punitive sanctions of $4 billion against the United States for government farm subsidies, according to Prensa Latina. After the WTO failed to reach an agreement on trade reforms at the Doha rounds, Brazil challenged U.S. farm programs and cited them as illegal under global trade rules. Brazil and Australia are trying to bolster a resumption of stalled world trade talks before the U.S. presidential elections in November, so their request for punitive sanctions isn’t lost amid the election buzz. Washington still has the opportunity to ask the WTO to authorize less in sanctions than Brazil is requesting. If America is subjected to Brazil’s proposed sanctions, the WTO will successfully stifle American farmers. The WTO is a biased organization that is threatening the depletion of American trade. Editor's note: The WTO is a biased organization that is restricting our constitutional rights. Our congress had no authority to sign the WTO agreements as they are presently written. The WTO places us in an unfair, uncompetitive position in our trading relations with other countries by preventing us from doing what is in our best interest. The WTO must be amened or we must get out of it. Source Prensa Latina:
