Michael Michaud of the 2nd District is working on legislation to create a new trade model. NAFTA became the model for subsequent free-trade agreements in Peru, Panama and South Korea, which have contributed to additional off-shoring of jobs. "I think that’s a failed model," Michaud said of NAFTA. "You look at shoes, the textile industry, the paper industry — they’ve all dramatically been affected [by free trade] because it’s very difficult to compete with countries that pay very little."
