Fading Dollar, Failing EconomyPublished 04/22/08 Thomas Heffner - Print ArticleE-mail - editor@economyincisis.org With the current abysmal strength of the dollar, the look of horror on Washington's face is how Americans feel when they try to buy something in Europe and most other countries. To strengthen our money and restore America to its former industrial glory days, we must curb our dependence on imports, produce more domestically and prevent the liquidation of our companies to foreign ownership. Our government needs to take responsible steps to accomplishing these goals. We must selectively use tariffs to prevent the loss of crucial industries as well as prevent the sale of important companies to foreign interests abroad. America needs a policy of intelligent trade that encourages the growth of domestic industries and diminishes the nation’s reliance on deficits and unnecessary imports that are wrecking the country. How can we ever re-start our industries (re-industrialize) to generate a positive balance of trade? Most of the men who knew how to operate the basic industry factories are now long dead. There are no books that completely tell how to do most of the things that we knew how to do years ago when we created the industries that won WWII and gave us our bountiful way of life.
