Beijing calls report ‘a plot’ and ‘brazen interference'

The greatest threat to American technology is not a terrorist attack, it’s China’s spying. This according to a congressional report due out Wednesday by the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission.

Beijing called the report ‘a plot’ and ‘brazen interference,’ as the rhetoric between the already-strained Sino-American relations heated up even further.

Highlights of the Congressional Report via the AP:

“A congressional advisory panel said Thursday that Chinese spying in America represents the greatest threat to U.S. technology and recommended lawmakers consider financing counterintelligence efforts meant to stop China from stealing U.S. manufacturing expertise.”

“… China's spies allow Chinese companies to get new technology "without the necessity of investing time or money to perform research." Chinese espionage was said to be straining U.S. counterintelligence officials and helping China's military modernization.”

China’s Angry Response:

"This report ignores the fact of China's progress in the areas of politics, economics, and society, is rooted in prejudice, and brazenly interferes in China's internal affairs," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao.

The report comes on the heels of increasing pressure on congress to narrow the widening trade deficit with China and address the quality of unsafe Chinese imports.

America ran a trade deficit, importing more than we export, of more than $760 billion in 2006. A large part of that deficit- $232 billion to be precise- is due to China’s unfair trade policies and abysmal labor practices.

Addressing these unfair practices is a step forward in ensuring that domestic industries get a fair-shake and that technological supremacy is not lost to Chinese espionage.
