Not So Free: Buchanan Slams Free Trade on Hardball DebatePublished 10/09/07 Economy In Crisis - Print ArticleE-mail - editor@economyincisis.org So-called "free trade" has unfairly allowed foreign manufacturers to devastate American manufacturing, forcing them out of business or to sell out. Pat Buchanan, slammed the effects of free trade in a debate with Bob Reich on Monday's Hardball with Chris Matthews: "We have lost 3 million manufacturing jobs since George Bush took office- 1 in every 6. If that is a successful trade policy, Dr. Reich, give us the statistics on failed policy.” There is no longer any doubt that our free trade agreements have devastated America and the middle class. America’s free trade policy has seen towering debts, stagnant middle class wages, a decimated manufacturing base and a free-falling dollar become commonplace. Free trade has fleeced the American worker and threatens our future prosperity. It makes no difference whether they are flipping hamburgers or washing dishes or mowing lawns.Earning a living wage is a basic human right.
People need to eat, buy homes, cloth themselves, purchase insurance, raise children, drive cars, pay for gas, etc.
Sound like too much?
Do the math.
$25x40= $1000 weekly salary and 52K a year.
Is that too much.
Especially when there are financial theives like William McGuire of US Healthcare ( an HMO) earning $1.6 BILLION per year in salary, benefits and stock options.
If anything we need to impose a 100% tax on any income exceeding $1 million dollars. This is a very generous proposal considering the rampant poverty and need in America.
Anyone who wants mroe than $1 million per year is being excessively greedy and should not be rewarded for his vice.
These are fair and reasonable proposals to help rebalance the totally undemocratic suppression of the the poor and middle classes from receiving their fair share in compensation for making our country run and function well.
