Goodbye To America's Fabled Economy

Published 07/23/07 Paul Craig Roberts* - Print Article

America is being destroyed. Many Americans are unaware, others are indifferent, and some intend it.

The destruction is across the board: the political and constitutional system, the economy, social institutions including the family itself, citizenship, and the character and morality of the American people.

The foundation of social organization—marriage, family, and parental control over children—is disintegrating.

Mass unassimilated and illegal immigration has destroyed the meaning of American citizenship and forced large numbers of Americans into unemployment. For example, Steve Camarota at the Center for Immigration Studies reported on June 20 that state employment data show that in the first six years of the 21st century 218,000 high school graduates in the state of Georgia have been employment- displaced by immigrants. Moreover, wages have stagnated, putting the lie to the claim that there is a shortage of workers. If there were a labor shortage, wages would be bid up and rising.

A Google search will call up enough information to make the case for these points many times over. However, the destruction of the US economy, though far advanced, is still largely unknown. It is to this subject that we turn.

For a number of years Charles McMillion of MBG Information Services and I have documented from BLS nonfarm payroll jobs data that the US economy in the 21st century no longer creates net new jobs in tradable goods and services. In the 21st century, job growth in “the world’s only superpower” has a definite third world flavor. US job growth has been limited to domestic services that cannot be moved offshore, such as waitresses and bartenders and health and social services.

These are not jobs that comprise ladders of upward mobility. Income inequality is worsening, and education is no longer the answer.

The problem is that middle class jobs, both in manufacturing and in professional occupations such as engineering, are being offshored as corporations replace their American workforces with foreigners. I have called jobs offshoring “virtual immigration.”

US JOBS: No American Need Apply

The latest bombshell is that even those professional jobs that remain located in America are not safe. There is a vast industry of immigration law firms that enable American corporations to replace their American workers with foreigners brought in on work visas.

For years Americans have been told that work visas are only issued in cases where there are no Americans with the necessary skills to fill the jobs. Americans have been reassured that safeguards are in place to prevent US companies from using the work visas to replace their American employees with foreigners paid below the prevailing US wage. Now, thanks to a video placed on “YouTube” by a US law firm, Cohen & Grigsby, marketing its services, we now know that it is easy for US companies to legally evade the “safeguards” and to replace their American employees with lower paid foreigners.

University of California computer science professor Norman Matloff has an excellent presentation available at his online site about the lack of impediments to the ability of US firms to replace their American employees with foreigners. Matloff says to keep in mind that Cohen & Grigsby “is NOT a rogue law firm.” The advice provided by Cohen & Grigsby is the standard advice given by the hoards of immigration attorneys who are personally cleaning up by putting Americans out of work.

Except for Lou Dobbs on CNN, the US TV and print media have so far ignored the astounding story. Where are the headlines: "US Jobs: No American Need Apply?"

We see that impact from foreign workers with special work visas displacing American workers. What about diversity programs providing women and minorities with safe harbors in government contracting and employment not so for white men? High paying govt. jobs are being filled to large extent minorities without regard to qualification. Baby boomers where spared competing in this new environment and to a large extent their economic advancement was not challenged A person from India automatically gets preferences in Government employment and government contracting 8a programs as a minority! They can also get special funding to start or maintain a business!

Not only is the American middle class worker being replaced by foreigners here on Visas, it has also driven down wages. We are inundated with workers from foreign countries who are willing to work for $8.00-$10.00 an hour, which is unrealistic in today's economy. Being from the South Florida area, the main complaint I hear from employers is "you can't find decent help anymore" my response to that is: "You get what you pay for!"

I would personally encourage everyone who cares about this issue to storm their congressmen and reps to change the VISA allowances now while there may be time.
I cannot personally understand why US companies would destroy the best market in the world to sell their goods to in lieu of markets they will never be able to sell their goods to. It will come back to haunt them, like the subprime lenders are now finding out.

I don't know why anyone would fault poor Paul Craig Roberts for anything that happened during the Reagan years. As I remember it he quit his position at the Treasury. It seems that he was as disgusted with the policies of the gipper as the guest of 7/28/07. As for the guest who knows the employment situation just by looking around him, all I can say is that I admire him. I wonder what he can do with chicken gizzards. As for me, I'll stick to the statistics thank you.

Don't even bother. You're never going to get the truth out of these people anyway. They lie, deny, obfuscate and wipe their hands on someone else whenever possible.
As America's ship slips beneath the waves of bankruptcy and insolvency, the very same people who punched holes in the hull and raced up to deck to announce that the ship was sinking will be stealing from the captains quarters until the last minute when they bail for a lifeboat.
They must not EVER get a lifeboat.

If these comments are right, did you go along with Reagan's illegal immigrant legislation?
How much money did you make?
Did you get any kickbacks from industry?
Did you helpmopen the door of trade to China? Did you resign when Reagan did all these things or still take a paycheck?
If you knucled under and did continue to take money as an appointee, then you should explain how much money you made through Reagan's policies and your business connections.
Its only fair.

Mr. Paul Craig Roberts: YOU have profitted at the expense of America's poor and middle classes. You are one of the architects of her destruction and helped create the current disaster through your recommendations and policies as a Reagan apostle.
Its highly hypocritical for you to argue about the demise of America while you ensured her death through your short selling policies! I would say that you fit the mold of a Republican hypocrit perfectly.
What policies?
What actions?
*Tax breaks for the wealthy gave them extra political advantage over the poor. The wealthy did not pay their fair share and allowed the deficit to balloon while overtaxing the poor and middle class.
George Bush II is following right in the foot steps you created through supply side Reaganomics.
*Free rides and failure to punish and fine Wall Street and NY tycoons such as Ivan Boevsky, Michael Milken and Leona Helmsley for defrauding the public and taking advantage of investors.
*Firing of union air traffic controllers demonstrated from the beginning of his presidency that he was anti-union, anti-American.
*Obscene Deficit spending that greatly devaled the dollar as it raised taxes on the poor and middle class
*Gave amnesty to illegal aliens to help break down uions and destroy American workers wages
*Relaxed environmental standards to allow corporations to spew more filth into the water, air and land that now plagues America with increased health care costs.
*Overbuilt military. Reagan helped create a bloated Military Industrial Complex and paved the way for the Iraq wars to use the tanks, planes, missles and other boy-toys. Incidentally, Reagan sold arms to both Iraq and Saddam to kill his own people and Iranians. Where were you Paul????
*Reagan wrecked the Soviet Union which was a stabilizing force for world order. Because of Reagan, we now have much more terrorism.
When our troops were attacked in Beirut, Regan just tucked his tail between his legs and ran off like a coward. Where were you Paul?
You there with your buddies Rumsfeld and Cheney conspiring how to create wars in the Middle East and profiteer from the arms sales.
Its funny that a man like you has the hypocritical audacity to think your readers don't know or remember your sins against our country.

Thanks for taking the time to write. Maybe someday when all these fools are standing in the soup line, they will finally get the "BIG PICTURE".

To the above poster, yes citing current stats might give credibility for readers such as yourself but point taken by the author. Just look around you and see what is happening to this country!

It's remarkable that you write an article on US Jobs without citing current employment and unemployment rates. While your at it you can collect the statistics over the past 20 years. Then maybe you can say something.
